As students, parents and educators the Chiapas Children's Project (La Chozita) strives to broaden opportunities within the indigenous Mayan community in and around San Cristóbal de Las Casas by offering academic assistance and by working with families, schools and social organizations to create an environment where education is both valued and available to all.

92% of indigenous students in México are prevented, by a variety of external factors, from completing their primary education.

Chozita means "shack" in Spanish, and you're
looking at pretty much the whole place, three
clapboard walls leaning against the back of our
landlord's house.

Spring 2008 Update

2008 is a year of new beginnings for La Chozita (the education programme that the Chiapas Children’s Project supports). There’s a new Acting Director, a new location and revised schedule – what remains unchanged is the commitment to helping the children realise their full potential.

A UNICEF assessment of the project concluded that La Chozita is doing something that no one else is doing and the work should be replicated elsewhere!

Students and Parents re-affirmed their commitment to the project in the autumn – there are now 19 children in La Chozita.

Since January 2008 the centre has moved to a superb new location in the city centre, not far from where most of the children live. The building is shared with ‘Germinalia’; a similar organisation working with university students.

Sofia Lopez is the new Acting Director and is being supported by an excellent team of volunteers. The search is on for a permanent Director to continue to deepen the local ownership of the project and its development to the next stage.

Challenge 2008

The Chiapas Children’s Project (UK) already receiving approximately £300 a month from supporters – if you’re giving, thank you. However for the education centre and scholarships to continue we need a further £300 a month. It’s just £30/month per student. Could you support one student over the next 12 months? A Standing Order of £25 a month (plus Gift Aid if you are a UK tax payer) would guarantee a child’s place.

Another way you could get involved is to become a trustee – it’s only six evening meeting a year – do get in touch with either david@lachozita.org or pbigmore@yahoo.co.uk if you’d like to find out more.
